Report: Commitment No. 11 Is In

Last February, Texas went a perfect six for six on offensive linemen, ultimately landing commitments from all six OL offers tendered at its first Junior Day, effectively wrapping up recruiting of the Big Uglies over 11 months before Signing Day '07. This year, the batting average is down slightly, but the Longhorn O-line class is again close to complete just shy of 365 days from Signing Day '08.

Reports indicate that Brenham's Luke Poehlmann, one of four OLs to receive offers during UT's first Junior Day this past Sunday, pledged to play for the Horns Thursday. Poehlmann is the Horns' 11th commitment for '08 and joins fellow OLs Austin High's Mark Buchanan and Gilmer's David Snow (plus Brenham teammate FB/LB Ryan Roberson) in the Texas fold. Paris OT Stephen Good also received an offer from Texas last weekend but committed to Oklahoma earlier this week.

According to Brenham head coach Glenn West, Poehlmann had an offer from the Sooners, as well as from Texas A&M, where he attended a junior day three weeks ago. West also said that LSU was on the verge of offering. "I think when it's all said and done Luke will be offered by almost everybody in the country if he waits that long to make a commitment," West told the Brenham Banner-Press.

But he did not wait. The Texas offer was simply too good to pass up.

Poehlmann told Inside Texas recently that "academics" would ultimately be the most important factor in his recruitment, although early playing time figured to be another consideration.

The 6-7, 260-pound Poehlmann (No. 22 on the pre-evaluation Texas Top 100) projects as a tackle on the Forty Acres, as does Buchanan, while Snow projects as a guard. Inside Texas' initial take-board for the '08 class projected three offensive linemen, but that number could climb to four with another top target, Aldine OT Daniel Campbell, slated to visit Austin for UT's second Junior Day scheduled for Feb. 24.

Commitment No. 12 may not be far behind. Mansfield Timberview ATH Antoine Hicks is set to announce his intentions Friday afternoon around 2:00. He was in Austin this past weekend and received a scholarship offer. He plays quarterback at Timberview, but is being recruited as an athlete and could end up playing QB, DB or WR on the next level.
