An Inside Texas conversation with Round Rock head coach Lanny Wilson on James Kirkendoll:

Inside Texas: How many different ways did y'all use James this past season?

Lanny Wilson: We used him every way you can think of. He returned kicks, kick-offs and punts, played cornerback for us on defense, played running back and receiver on offense. His junior year we played him some at quarterback. So we played him anywhere and everywhere you can think of.

IT: Obviously he's put up a lot of statistics on the field, what's he like off the field?

Wilson: Great character, good person, good leader. He acts right and makes his grades. You don't have to deal with outside issues with James.

IT: Is he more of a vocal leader or more of a lead-by-example kind of guy?

Wilson: Well, both. He's a leader by example, but also he helps other people out and he'll say good things to them and he'll help you coach some.

IT: What was the recruiting process like in terms of the commitment switch (from Oklahoma)?

Wilson: You know James has had a lot of offers and he's done a lot of good things for himself and basically that was just up to him and his family and I'm going to leave that up to him and his family.

IT: How'd the Texas staff handle it?

Wilson: Oh they're fine with it. They've got a great player and James is close to home and they've seen him a bunch, so they know what they're getting.

IT: What are some of the things he's going to have to work on as he's making the transition from high school to the Division I football level?

Wilson: He's a great athlete, basically just the speed of the game and the size and the strength of the players in the game. It'll be the same game, but the competitors and the environment will be a little tougher.

IT: What skills does he have that'll make the transition easier and let him get an edge on some of the other guys?

Wilson: Speed is his thing. He's fast and you have to have that. He's got the tools, he's athletic, he can catch, he can do stuff, but he's really fast.

IT: Is he going to be a receiver at Texas?

Wilson: What they're looking at is receiver and a return guy. I'm sure when he gets over there they'll look at him. There's lots of options with James and see what he looks best at and where he fits in their program best and that's where they'll utilize him.

IT: In terms of total package, what is Texas getting in James Kirkendoll?

Wilson: They're getting a good student, a good person and a great football player.
