Inside Texas gained some interesting insight into Foswhitt "Fozzy" Whitaker after talking to his Pearland High School head coach, Tony Heath. Whittaker, who also ran track in high school, played in the 2007 East Meets West All-American game and led all rushers with 127 yards on 19 carries.
IT: How would you categorize his strengths as a football player?
Heath: The number one thing with Fozzy is, he's got class and character. His demeanor on and off the field is perfect. He's confident, but not cocky, and very personable. He's in National Honor Society, and he's real active in his church. On the field, he's quick, knowledgeable and coachable, and he's got great cutback ability and vision.
IT: What did the UT coaches say they liked about him?
Heath: They said they are going to look at him at running back before trying him at some other position. He was recruited as an athlete, though, and he's definitely a cornerback-type athlete.
IT: In what areas do you think he needs to improve?
Heath: Like every other kid his age, he probably needs to improve a little bit at just about everything he does. But to get specific, he probably needs to get stronger and work on his physical durability.
IT: Was he a team leader for you?
Heath: He's very much a leader, a lot of fun to be around but not overly vocal. He was the first one in the lockerroom to pull a prank for us, and he knows how to keep everything loose. But at the same time, he knows you have to earn the right to be a leader, so he'll fit in great at Texas.
IT: Did he play any other positions?
DM: He played running backs for us and ran back kicks, but he didn't play defense.
IT: Where do you think he'll play at UT?
DM: Well I'm sure he's going to start out at running back, and then he and the coaches will figure out where he is best suited. Like I said, he'll do a great job wherever you put him.
IT: What's impressive about his measurables?
DM: He runs a 4.4 or 4.5 40, but he's also strong for his size.
IT: What was his defining moment in high school?
DM: He had way too many great plays to be able to focus on just one. The thing about Fozzy is, when it's 3rd and 6 or 3rd and 7, he's going to pick up the first down. He's just a winner. I know that's simple, but that's exactly what you want. But not only is he a winner, he's also a great athlete and leader. He's the whole package.
