Thomas Ashcraft: Big Summer Ahead

Cedar Hill offensive lineman Thomas Ashcraft was one of the most successful in-state sophomores on the field last year. He started every game for a very talented Longhorn squad who marched through the playoffs on their way to a 5A state title. The big Texan already has a good idea of the schools he will take strong interest in and has a big summer planned.

"I started every game at left guard," Thomas Ashcraft said. "It feels real good. Not many teams make it that far. Only being a sophomore, I was able to get an early feel of the pressure that comes with playing in a state title game. That was real good for me. I will have that experience for later on."

When a player receives such a prestigious honor as Sophomore of the Year and is a First Team All-District selection, college football programs are bound to take notice. Several high profile schools made the trip to Cedar Hill during spring practice to get a look at Ashcraft.

"Oklahoma, (Texas A&M, Texas, Kansas, Kansas State and maybe LSU," Ashcraft replied when asked about the schools that stopped by during spring practice.

The 6-foot-5, 270-pound offensive lineman will likely be one of the most sought after prospects in the 2009 class, but five schools have already jumped out to an early lead in the Thomas Ashcraft sweepstakes.

"OU, Texas, A&M, Florida and USC," Ashcraft said when asked about his top schools. "I am going to camp at UT, OU, A&M, USC and maybe Florida."

Ashcraft talked about what stands out about each of the schools within his top five.

"Texas was probably my favorite team growing up. They win all the time. Texas is home. I like their facilities and coaches," Ashcraft said. "I went to football camp in Austin going into my freshman and sophomore years."

"With Oklahoma, I like their coaches. I am very familiar with them. I've been up there a couple of times. I also like their campus."

"A&M has a nice atmosphere. I like the tradition that they have."

"I haven't had the chance to go to Florida yet. I just know that they have a good football team."

"I have been to a camp for USC. It was real fun and exciting."

Ashcraft is already very familiar with most of the schools in his top five. He has visited Texas, Texas A&M and Oklahoma several times. He has also been to camp at USC. After his sophomore season, Ashcraft attended several junior days and spring games.

"I went to Oklahoma. I have been to A&M to junior days and spring games," Ashcraft said.

Ashcraft is one of the most complete offensive linemen in the state of Texas. He talked about his strengths as a football player.

"I am very coachable and learn quickly. I have good footwork and quickness," Ashcraft said. "I have also been working on my hand placement."

Ashcraft reported a 330-pound bench max and a 460-pound squat max. He runs the 40-yard dash in 5.1 seconds.
