Texas Trails in Rain Suspended Regional
The Texas Longhorns officially trail 6-5 to UC Irvine in the bottom of the seventh in their Round Rock Regional, which was suspended because of lighting in the area and will be finished at 1 p.m. Monday.
The Texas Longhorns topped Wake Forest, 7-4, in twelve innings to stay alive in the Round Rock Regional, despite a dramatic late charge from the Demon Deacons. The Horns will battle UC Irvine in the night half of their double-header.
Horns on brink of elimination
It's a real season on the brink. The Texas Longhorns are staring elimination in the face, and they'll be doing it all night and all morning. That's because UC Irvine was leading the Longhorns 6-5 in the bottom of the seventh inning of the Round Rock Regional on Sunday when inclement weather forced the game to be suspended.
Texas' season hanging on the edge
Season called on account of rain. Or rather UC Irvine. Well, maybe a combination. The final outcome of Texas' season remains to be determined but severe lightning and heavy showers suspended play late Sunday night, with Texas pushed to the very brink by the Anteaters.
'Nothing to lose' against Longhorns, Brown players say
Texas' baseball players typically receive athletic scholarships. Brown's typically receive financial aid, often in the form of academic scholarships. The Longhorns play Stanford, San Diego and Oklahoma State. The Bears play Harvard, Yale and Penn. The Longhorns are gunning for their seventh national title. The Bears are playing in their first NCAA regional game. There are differences between the No. 5-ranked Longhorns, the Big 12 regular-season champions, and their Ivy League champion opponent in the opening round of the Round Rock Regional. But that doesn't mean the Bears are star struck or even wide-eyed.
Rain helps UT play another day
Dallas Morning News
Texas coach Augie Garrido said his team needed a hero. He got one Sunday night – Mother Nature. UT trailed UC Irvine, 6-5, when umpires decided to halt play going into the bottom of the seventh inning because of lightning. Then, a prolonged thunderstorm started and the game was suspended. Play will resume at 1 p.m. today at Dell Diamond.
UT ousts Wake Forest; game vs. UC Irvine suspended
San Antonio Express-News
The Texas Longhorns made it to Monday at the NCAA Round Rock regional. For that, they can thank third baseman Bradley Suttle. They can also thank Mother Nature. Suttle hit a two-run double to break a tie in the top of the 12th to help UT overcome a ninth-inning meltdown and tough out a 7-4 victory over Wake Forest in a Sunday afternoon elimination game at Dell Diamond. A lightning-fueled deluge suspended the Longhorns' must-win nightcap against UC Irvine later Sunday.
Weather keeps Texas alive another day
Their backs were against the wall. Their pitchers were overworked to the point of exhaustion. They had just seen Nick Peoples break his collarbone on a diving catch in center field. Yet somehow the Texas baseball team has clung to survival in the Round Rock Regional, even if it came with the assistance of a rain delay. One loss away from a bus trip back to Austin, Texas' hopes for a super-regional bid were kept alive when the Longhorns' Sunday night game against UC Irvine was postponed until today due to lightning and rain.
Texas hitting can't take pressure off pitching staff
Scores can be deceiving. Texas is 2-1 in the NCAA Regional at Round Rock. They beat Brown 8-2. Then, after losing to UC Irvine 3-1, they defeated Wake Forest 7-4. Currently, they trail the Anteaters 5-6 after six-and-a-half innings of Sunday's elimination game. While scoring 15 runs over the two wins looks good, the struggles reflected in the loss have been persistent all weekend. Texas' runs have come late in games, keeping pressure on the Longhorn pitching staff throughout the game. Now, with the season on the line, the staff is overworked.
UC Irvine still six outs away
Postseason for the UC Irvine baseball team was extended Sunday night, but not exactly the way the Anteaters had in mind. Game 6 of the NCAA Regional at Dell Diamond was suspended after an 84-minute rain delay with the Anteaters leading, 6-5, in the bottom of the seventh inning.
Rain conspiracy theory invalid
Conspiracy theorists may believe that Texas being behind in the middle of the seventh inning may have helped speed the decision to suspend play Sunday night in the NCAA Regional at Dell Diamond. But the objective observer would likely conclude that a reasonable and acceptable protocol was followed before the 84-minute delay prompted the decision-makers to bring everyone back for the scheduled resumption of the game today at 11 a.m.
Will offer from Longhorns sway Givens?
The possibility of decommitments during the recruiting process seems inevitable. It's a natural process you might say. But it's never good for those fans and coaches of the team it happens to. With the recent offer from the Texas Longhorns to current Husker commit Bryce Givens, is the writing already on the wall? Bryce talked about that and if Husker fans have anything to worry about right now.
There is something in the water in Brenham, Texas, and the Longhorns have taken full advantage over the last few years. The pipeline started with star wide receiver Limas Sweed. Since then, Texas has picked up commitments from Brandon Collins, Ahmard Howard, Luke Poehlmann and Ryan Roberson. Poehlmann talked about his commitment to Texas and the stars in the class of '09.
