Sherrod Harris Injures Knee

The University of Texas has confirmed that backup quarterback Sherrod Harris suffered a knee injury during Sunday night's practice. More details on the situation inside...

Quarterback Sherrod Harris suffered a bruised knee during Sunday night's practice and is sitting for now, Texas Athletics confirmed. He will undergo an MRI to determine the extent of the injury.

A source within the Texas Athletics Department told Inside Texas that it initially did not appear to be a tear, but the training staff will await the result of the MRI before making that determination.

In a release from Texas, Harris said:

"I'm disappointed that I'm going to have to miss some practice time because of the injury but I'm still going to be out at practice every day preparing for the season with my teammates and coaches. I'll work with the trainers and doctors to get my knee back to 100 percent and return to the field as soon as possible."

Also in the release, athletic trainer Kenny Boyd is quoted as saying:

"No timetable has been set on his (Harris') return. We will be evaluating him on a daily basis in hopes that he can be back in time for the season opener."

Harris was locked in a neck-and-neck battle with true freshman QB John Chiles for the backup job behind starter Colt McCoy. There was discussion amongst the Texas coaching staff recently about possibly redshirting Chiles or moving him to another position if he was unable to win the backup job, but with Harris' injury it clearly puts Chiles in the driver's seat.

This is not the first injury Harris has suffered in his career. In August before his senior year at Arlington Bowie, Harris suffered a torn meniscus, which he kept hidden from coaches and played on through excruciating pain. When Inside Texas visited Harris at his high school after he signed with Texas, the mobile quarterback was on crutches after finally having surgery to repair his injury. This is on top of a hernia he also suffered during his high school career.

The only other scholarship quarterback on the roster is true freshman G.J. Kinne, who may also factor into the equation.
