Longhorns' Bailey writes his way into history
Austin American-Statesman
Ryan Bailey was an eighth-grader who was running out of time to beg and plead for an opportunity to play on the Murchison Middle School football team when he came up with a last-ditch idea. He wrote a letter to his mom and hung it on her door.

Ohio State on the schedule?
Austin American-Statesman
With the college football exhibition season less than a week away, it's fun to look back and remember the good old days, when Texas played real competition in nonconference games. Like, say, 2006 and 2005. Back when Texas played Ohio State. Both years.

Longhorns have a pounding headache
Dallas Morning News
September 1 can't get here soon enough. I'm tired of waiting. I want to know how Texas has addressed its running game, how the secondary and chemistry is coming together and how John Chiles looks as a change-of-pace to starting quarterback Colt McCoy. But let's focus on the running game for a second.

Jones, Cosby focus of UT passing game
Dallas Morning News
Senior receiver Nate Jones and junior Quan Cosby have become Colt McCoy's focus in the passing game until Limas Sweed (wrist), Billy Pittman (shoulder) and Jordan Shipley (hamstring) return from injuries.

UT suffering from catching ailment
San Antonio Express-News
Not long ago, Forbes magazine released a list of the 10 most dangerous jobs in America. Somehow, playing wide receiver at Texas didn't make the cut. After what they've been through this August, UT's suddenly banged-up pass-catching corps ought to demand a recount.

We've got all the answers
San Antonio Express-News
So, without further build-up, here are our answers to every question you might have about the Longhorns this season, but were too cool to ask …

Rebirth of the triplets?
Houston Chronicle
This year's receiving corps is arguably the deepest in the 10-year Mack Brown era. But is it the best? Would you take Limas Sweed, Quan Cosby and Billy Pittman? Or do you favor Roy Williams, B.J. Johnson and Sloan Thomas, regarded as the best group of receivers under Brown.

Hall-in' his own weight
Daily Texan
Chris Hall had one heck of a fall camp. Throughout two-a-days the sophomore offensive guard impressed his coaches so much Mack Brown gave him the unofficial title of Most Improved Player.

Undersized bunch of Longhorn DBs out to prove selves

Texas' secondary was a mess last year, and it wasn't easy to see why. They had the athletes, including a couple of first-round picks. Their coach was on his way to having a second straight defensive back win the Thorpe Award. Perhaps it was simply a product of the emphasis they put on stopping the run. In that regard, they were among the best, ranking third in the nation. Against the pass though, they found themselves ranked 99 out of 119 teams. Now three members of that secondary have moved on to the NFL. Cornerback Aaron Ross went with the 20th pick to the New York Giants, while safety Michael Griffin was taken one pick earlier by Tennessee. Griffin's twin brother, Marcus, is the only returning starter on the unit that has quickly become Texas' biggest question mark.

Associated Press
A bad finish to 2006 made that championship season of '05 seem like a long time ago for Texas.

Texas QB McCoy still looks like kid but is team leader now
Associated Press
Colt McCoy is bigger, wiser, stronger and, according to his coach, playing better than ever. He's even an NCAA record-holder. Now if he could just grow some chin whiskers.

Indians' scout teams imitating Longhorns
Arkansas Democrat Gazette
Some people might think it is asking a lot of Arkansas State to play Texas. It was certainly asking a lot of Arkansas State's scout team to portray Texas on Thursday night.

Starter named, but QB race not over
Fort Worth Star-Telegram
Oklahoma's quarterbacks met with the media for the first time in more than three weeks Thursday. Bradford, true freshman Keith Nichol and junior Joey Halzle all believe the same thing: Bradford will start against North Texas, but beyond that anything can happen. Nichol thinks he will still get a chance to play on Saturdays.

Does Benson Need More Carries?
The Bears made many headlines in the offseason, but trading away leading rusher Thomas Jones was one of the biggest. Cedric Benson is now the main man in the backfield after a two-year wait, and he looks to be on the verge of a 300-plus carry kind of season. Offensive coordinator Ron Turner continues to call a lot of pass plays during the preseason, but shouldn't he be getting Benson ready, too?

Righty Alaniz continues to find magic
