Texas Gunslinger with Big 12 Offer

Heading into the 2007 high school football season, many are wondering which 2009 quarterback the Texas Longhorns are going to go after. Many consider Cy Ridge's Russell Shepard and Lake Travis' Garrett Gilbert to be the best of the bunch. Gilbert currently holds a Big 12 offer, but has he heard from the Longhorns?

"I've gotten an offer from Nebraska," Garrett Gilbert said. "I know that they have a great coaching staff. Coach (Bill) Callahan is a really good coach. I also know that they throw the ball pretty well and always have a really good defense."

"I am getting a bunch of letters from different schools," Gilbert added.

He didn't mention any names, but Gilbert did say that the Texas Longhorns were not one of the schools sending mail at this time. The Lake Travis coaching staff hasn't been in contact with many schools either.

"Not really," Gilbert said when asked if his coach had been talking with any schools. "They are more focused on game planning for each game, and so am I."

Gilbert may not be focused on recruiting right now, but he does know what he is looking for in a school.

"I think that is an important factor," Gilbert said when asked if he wanted to stay close to home. "I'm also going to look at the type of system they run and the coaching staff. A winning tradition and a clean program will also be important."

Lake Travis has started the season 1-1 this year behind the leadership of Gilbert.

"We are 1-1 right now. We won the first game and lost a close game in the second," Gilbert said. "I think we can come together and play pretty well. We have a pretty good team."
