Rice Game Report Cards

IT's Coaches Corner Moderator Mike Venable grades the Longhorn performances in Texas' 58-14 win over Rice.

We had a huge offensive explosion against Rice with at least 31 position players receiving snaps and we expertly executed two different schemes of moving the football at will. The Colt offense threw the football at every level and dazzled the Rice secondary which set up the usual bag of counters and zones---our red zone running game looked much better because we drove people backwards and attacked straight ahead. In the second half we dusted off the original VY package as we turned John Chiles loose with the zone read/QB draw revisited. Here are the grades:

Offensive Report Card

We were able to play twenty five position players against the Rice Owls and several individuals raised their stock with sparkling efforts. The great thing about a game like this is the good natured ribbing that occurs in the position video rooms where everybody shares comments and thoughts among each other. There is still a certain business like approach with the needed corrections but the mood is definitely lighter. We still made too many mistakes but the number of big hits and quality plays was much higher than our first three games provided. Here are the grades:

Defensive Report Card

The Coaches Corner is available exclusively to InsideTexas.com subscribers. The forum is a place to ask questions of our resident coaches and talk about Xs and Os, schemes, gameplans, offensive and defensive theories, etc. Basically, it is a teaching and learning forum to make us all more knowledgable football fans, both in general and specifically about the Longhorn football team. Venable spent 30 years as the DC and LB coach at five Texas high schools (Lancaster, Duncanville, Pasadena Sam Rayburn, Carrollton Turner, and The Colony) before retiring in 2000. Four of his former players played at UT (Mike Williams, Steve Massey, Jimmy Johnson, and Doug Livingston) and around twenty are currently coaching in Texas high schools.
