Baylor Game Report Cards

IT's Coaches Corner Moderator Mike Venable grades the Longhorn performances in Texas' 31-10 win over Baylor.

The UT offense had almost three hundred yards passing and almost two hundred on the ground and yet found it extremely difficult to put points on the board against Baylor last week. The wind played havoc with the balls in the air as we overthrew two sure TD's and witnessed the bears picking off two more errant offerings. One bad play helped keep this a seven point game with seven minutes left instead of a comfortable lead. A fumbled option pitch was returned sixty yards before a face mask tackle added another fifteen and Baylor scored on the next play. Here are the grades:

Offensive Report Card

We played very opportunistic defense against a very average Baylor offense this week. The wind played nasty tricks with the passing game and we came out definite winners with four interceptions while the Bears were saddled with several drops by their own receivers. It was still a seven point game with seven minutes left when we turned one oskie into great field position and another into a quick six when Marcus took it ninety one yards to paydirt. The Coaches Corner is available exclusively to subscribers. The forum is a place to ask questions of our resident coaches and talk about Xs and Os, schemes, gameplans, offensive and defensive theories, etc. Basically, it is a teaching and learning forum to make us all more knowledgable football fans, both in general and specifically about the Longhorn football team. Venable spent 30 years as the DC and LB coach at five Texas high schools (Lancaster, Duncanville, Pasadena Sam Rayburn, Carrollton Turner, and The Colony) before retiring in 2000. Four of his former players played at UT (Mike Williams, Steve Massey, Jimmy Johnson, and Doug Livingston) and around twenty are currently coaching in Texas high schools. subscription information
