Basketball Poll Report: Sweet 16

The first official college basketball poll is out and the Texas Longhorns are ranked No. 16. The Horns are one of three Big 12 squads in the first Coaches' Poll of the season.

Under Rick Barnes, Texas has consistently been a Sweet 16-quality basketball team and, according the to coaches, the Horns are exactly the 16th best team.

Gone is Kevin Durant to the NBA and his 25.8 points and 11.1 rebounds per game are gone with him. But the Coaches' who vote on the Top 25 saw fit to keep the Horns up at 16th thanks to a solid corps of sophomores returning to the team, led by preseason Big 12 Player of the Year D.J. Augustin.

In one of the closest votes ever for the top spot, the North Carolina Tar Heels barely edge out UCLA, but the Bruins, who the Longhorns face on December 2nd, hold the most first-place votes with 12. Memphis is third and has eight first-place votes and the one remaining first-place vote goes to No. 4 Kansas. The Georgetown Hoyas are fifth.

Along with the Jayhawks and the Horns, there is one other Big 12 team in the preseason Top 25. Texas A&M is just in front of the Longhorns, tied for 14th with Gonzaga.

The Longhorns will start with an exhibition against Xavier of Louisiana on Friday, November 2nd and then officially start the 2007-2008 basketball season on November 12th against Texas-San Antonio.
