Better without Durant? Yikes, fill your crazy prescriptions
There is this silly theory bouncing around about Texas. It started in New Jersey after a blowout of Tennessee, then gained momentum in Los Angeles following a win over UCLA. Some reporter said it on a radio show, then it was repeated on another radio show, then it picked up energy on television and message boards to the point where people who haven't seen the Longhorns or Kevin Durant often enough to have an opinion on either now have strong opinions on both. And that's how we ended up where we are today, with folks readily insisting with little explanation other than a win-loss record that Texas is better without its reigning National Player of the Year. To which I say, really? Is the whole world on crazy pills?

Remember last season when then-Texas A&M coach Billy Gillispie got his coaching shorts in a wad over then-Big 12 commissioner Kevin Weiberg's observation that the league was "one of the five or six best conferences" in the country? Billy Clyde felt the commish should have lobbied, rather than speak the truth. Based on this season's early returns, the Big 12 doesn't need someone to pump conference strength. The RPI Report, for instance, ranks the Big 12 just behind the Atlantic Coast Conference in its power ratings, and the Big 12's three best teams -- No. 3 Kansas, No. 4 Texas and No. 14 Texas A&M -- have made national ripples in the season's first month.

When Fred Akers succeeded legendary Darrell Royal as football coach at Texas in 1977, one of the first things he did was have a heart-to-heart with All-America fullback Earl Campbell. Smart guy, that Akers.
