One-on-One with Mark Buchanan

ORLANDO -- Texas commitment Mark Buchanan talked about what it's been like trying to block Daquan Bowers in practice, what Texas fans can expect from him in tomorrow's game, about the possibility of redshirting next fall and much more in an exclusive interview with Inside Texas after Under Armour practice on Friday.

IT: How has practice gone throughout the week?

Mark Buchanan: It's been going pretty good. It's been tough going up against a couple of these guys. I think we may have the better d-line of the two teams, so it's definitely been challenging. I can't really see what any of my teammates have been doing because I've been so preoccupied with the pass rush.

IT: I know there has been a lot of talk about Daquan Bowers this week. Have you had a chance to try and block him?

Buchanan: Yeah, I've gone against him a couple of times. He's really good. He may have beat me one or two times, but he's bound too. That kid is a freak. Mostly I have been going up against Chase Thomas. He has been helping on the speed rush.

IT: What are some of the things that you have learned while you have been down here?

Buchanan: When you are playing in high school, you can kind of drop anybody anytime you want too, but you can't do that once you get to this level. If you stay on your guy and nobody gets by you, you did a good job. You don't have to drive them into the ground every time.

IT: What can Texas fans expect from you tomorrow?

Buchanan: I'm going to try and do my best. I think I'm the starting left tackle. It's just going to be a lot of pass protection. I'm used to doing a lot of downfield blocking. That's kind of my game, but in all-star games it's kind of illegal. It's probably going to be a whole lot of pass blocking and probably some outside zone, and I'm pretty good at that.

IT: What did you think of the Holiday Bowl?

Buchanan: I thought it was great. I was real impressed. I'm glad they kind of stepped up. I saw a lot of fire coming from all the players which kind of excited me.

IT: What are you expecting out of your first year at Texas?

Buchanan: I don't know. I'm going in and starting next week. We will just wait and see how things develop and how I can do in spring ball. I'd rather not waste a year playing 15 or 20 plays the entire season. I'd rather just redshirt. I have talked to a couple of older guys, like (Charlie) Tanner and a couple of other guys and they said redshirt year wasn't all that bad. They said it was kind of fun looking back on it. I wouldn't mind doing it. I just want to do what is best for the team.
