Finley bolts Horns for shot at NFL

The past week has been decimating for next year's Texas offense. On Monday, sophomore Jermichael Finley — one of the most prolific tight ends in Longhorn history — announced he was leaving school for the NFL. Last Wednesday, junior tailback Jamaal Charles, who rushed for 1,619 yards in 2007, also declared early for the draft. The pair was set to be the offensive cornerstones, along with quarterback Colt McCoy, this fall. Finley was the athletic tight end who likened himself most to a wide receiver. Charles was the game-changing running back.

Could Akina be headed to Hawaii?

It's still uncertain whether June Jones has actually resigned from Hawaii to take the job at SMU. If he does leave — and signs are strong he will do so — Jones has come up with a list of replacements for him as head coach of the Warriors. A Hawaii newspaper said there are five names on the list. One is Texas secondary coach Duane Akina, who grew up in Hawaii.

Texas Longhorns' Jermichael Finley heading to NFL

Redshirt sophomore tight end Jermichael Finley on Monday became the second Texas player to forgo remaining eligibility and make himself eligible for the NFL draft. Finley's announcement in a statement released by the school comes after junior running back Jamaal Charles, the Big 12's leading rusher in 2007, also announced he was going pro.

Texas A&M and Texas have agreed to move their annual game back to Thanksgiving night, Aggies athletic director Bill Byrne said Monday. The move, however, is awaiting league approval, according to sources on both sides.

After 15 years butting heads with North Carolina and others in the Atlantic Coast Conference, new Texas coach Gail Goestenkors is about to learn what it takes to win in a new league. The No. 15 Longhorns (12-2) open Big 12 play Wednesday night at Nebraska (11-3) and Coach G will see what it means to wear the burnt orange in places like Lincoln, Ames, Iowa, Norman, Okla., and just a few miles up the road in Waco.
