Augustin, Abrams Lead Texas to Win Over OU

A cat-and-mouse game ended with the Texas Longhorns on top in a 64-54 win over the Oklahoma Sooners Wednesday night in Norman. Guard A.J. Abrams was the leading scorer with 22 points, followed closely by standout sophomore guard D.J. Augustin, who put up 19 of his own and seven assists.

Although Texas head coach Rick Barnes was put in Bob Stoop's suite and Oklahoma holds a 45-24 lead in the all-time series, the Sooners should have tried harder than that to get in Barnes' head. The Horns are now 11-13 against the Sooners under Barnes after adding one more to the win column.

Oklahoma guard Tony Crocker kicked off the game with a three-point jumper to give the Sooners a quick lead. Oklahoma held the lead until about 5 minutes into the second half, but Texas kept the heat on. The Horns never strayed by more than 10 and spent most of the first half only a few lay-ups behind OU. After nipping at the Sooners' heels long enough, a jumper by A.J. Abrams from behind the arc finally evened the teams out with 14:06 left. A ten-point run put the Horns up 52-44 with about 7 minutes left and the view never changed. Mason's two free throws in the final minute gave him double-digit scoring numbers and brought Texas up 62-51 and gave them their largest lead of the game.

The Sooners achieved their third lowest point total this season. Noticeably absent was star 6-foot-11 forward Longar Longar, who was missing due to injury. Texas held Oklahoma to 29 percent from the field in the second half.

Freshman Clint Chapman made his first career start replacing Sophomore Damion James. James lost his starting spot after a less than impressive defensive effort against Texas A&M two games ago. After four and a half minutes of action, Chapman headed to the bench for the rest of the game. James only put up two points of his own, which is a season worse, after coming off of the bench for the second straight game.

Oklahoma brothers Blake and Taylor Griffin put up a combined 31 on the scoreboard with Blake hitting 6 of 9 from the field and 7 of 8 from the free throw line. Also joining the double digit club were David Godbold, who added 12 and sank three of nine from three-point range, and Tony Crocker rounding out the list of scorers with his 11 points.

D.J. Augustin cleaned the glass six times to lead his team in rebounds, followed by Mason and Junior F/C Connor Atchley bringing down four boards each. Atchley, James and Freshman forward Gary Johnson each wound up with 4 fouls and spent the night rotating.

The Texas Longhorns will be in Ames, Iowa to take on Iowa State this Saturday. Tip-off is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. (CST).
