Texas opens spring football drills today with plans to lean on fresh ideas from two young assistants coach Mack Brown has called "stars" in the coaching profession. Will Muschamp, 36, is the Longhorns' new defensive coordinator. He is expected to improve a unit that gave up 371.2 yards per game last season, the seventh-worst average in school history. Major Applewhite, 29, is Texas' new running backs coach and will have input into the team's game plans.

Long-awaited season opener this weekend
It took a while to get started, but it's finally here. After waiting an additional three weeks to get going this year, Texas' baseball team opens its season at UFCU Disch-Falk Field today. The Longhorns have a new-look team and a renovated stadium, but the expectations are the same as they've always been - a trip to Omaha, Neb. Texas' absence from the College World Series the previous two seasons is at the forefront of the Longhorns' minds.
Texas faces rival A&M
Based on their 10-2 record at the Erwin Center, the women's basketball team has proven there's no place like home. If only they had a pair of red slippers in their last two games. Texas (16-10, 4-8 Big 12) is coming off of back-to-back losses on the road to Colorado and No. 16 Oklahoma State. The Longhorns head back to the comfort of the Erwin Center for a showdown with No. 19 Texas A&M (19-7, 7-5).

With Vince Young back on the Texas campus attending classes, some other former Longhorns are already preparing for job interviews. But not just any job interviews. We're talking about the NFL variety. Seven Longhorns are among a group of more than 300 former college players participating in the NFL combine in Indianapolis this week. The combine began on Wednesday and runs four days.
Texas TE Finley pleased to be going to 'next level'
Sooner fans won't have to fret over Texas tight end Jermichael Finley any more. And Finley won't have to fret over Longhorn coaches who won't devise ways to get him the football. Finley said Thursday during interviews at the NFL Scouting Combine that he became frustrated with the lack of passes thrown his way after his breakout game against Oklahoma. That's why he decided to skip his senior season at UT and turn pro.
