Augustin's 30 Not Enough as UT Falls to Tech

J.D. Lewis' final shot fell short and the Red Raiders held off a late Texas comeback to win 83-80 in Lubbock. D.J. Augustin scored 30 points for Texas in the loss, which snapped a run of eight straight victories for the Longhorns.

Box Score

The Texas Longhorns came storming back late, but it didn't matter because Alan Voskuil kept making free throws.

The junior guard came of the bench for Texas Tech to score 18 points, sinking all ten of his free throws in the game, including eight over the final 1:04.

The Red Raiders missing free throws was one of the reasons Texas was able to get back into the game. With 2:13 to go, the Horns still trailed by 11, but over the next minute Texas Tech missed five free throws, while Texas quickly made up the gap thanks to a three and a two-point jumper from D.J. Augustin, plus a three-point play from Gary Johnson.

With Texas within four points, it was foul-and-shoot all the way to the final buzzer, but Tech kept in-bounding to Voskuil, who did not stop making his free throws.

Texas' loss to the Red Raiders snapped an eight-game winning streak for the Horns and leaves Texas (24-5, 11-3 in Big 12) just a half-game up on Kansas for the Big 12 regular season crown. The win for Texas Tech takes the Red Raiders up to 16-12 and 7-7 in conference.

It was still a big game for Augustin. The Player of the Year candidate scored 30 points in the loss, dishing out three assists and grabbing four boards. Damion James put up a double-double again for Texas, scoring 10 and pulling down 12 rebounds.

Voskuil's 18 led the Red Raiders, who also got a double digit game from Charlie Burgess, John Roberson, Trevor Cook and Martin Zeno.

The Longhorns return home for their final two conference games. Texas next takes on the Nebraska Cornhuskers on Tuesday night at the Erwin Center before facing Oklahoma State next Sunday.
