Augustin is our pick for Big 12's best
Austin American-Statesman
Where would the Texas Longhorns be without D.J. Augustin? Rick Barnes has little patience for hypothetical questions. But it's a pretty safe bet where his Longhorns wouldn't be without their crafty point guard — they wouldn't be Big 12 Conference co-champions and the No. 1 seed in this week's conference tournament. Consequently, the Texas sophomore is the Austin American-Statesman's Big 12 player of the year, earning the award in a razor-thin choice over remarkable Kansas State freshman Michael Beasley.

Barnes named Big 12 coach of the year
Austin American-Statesman
Rick Barnes, whose Longhorns are Big 12 regular-season co-champions for the second time in the last three years, was named coach of the year by his peers in the league Monday. Barnes received the award for the third time after leading Texas to a 26-5 record, including 13-3 in the Big 12, a mark matched by Kansas. The Longhorns are the No. 1 seed in this week's Big 12 tournament because they beat Kansas in Austin.

Defense is keeping Texas in the NCAA mix
Austin American-Statesman
The Texas women's basketball team is in position to make the NCAA tournament largely because of its defense. And if Texas is to advance in the Big 12 Conference tournament, which starts today, it will be because of how well the Longhorns press, how effortlessly they can go back and forth between man and zone.

Texas women peaking at right time
Dallas Morning News
Good trial lawyers never ask a question if they don't know the answer first. Surprises can doom your case. That's why Texas women's coach Gail Goestenkors proceeded with caution during a team meeting on Feb. 25. With three games remaining, the Longhorns wanted to know about their NCAA Tournament chances.

A brawl is building for crown in Big 12
Fort Worth Star-Telegram
In her first year at Texas as women's basketball coach, Gail Goestenkers has already had a lot of great moments. The Longhorns have defeated two RPI Top 10 teams and have nine victories over teams in the Top 100. Texas has won six road games and is No. 33 in the RPI with the 17th toughest schedule in the country. And... it's a long shot to make the NCAA Tournament. That's because UT is in the Big 12, unquestionably the toughest league in the country.

Lady Raiders get another shot at Texas
Lubbock Avalanche-Journal
As she surveyed the visiting locker room at the Frank Erwin Center in Austin Wednesday night, Kristy Curry didn't see anything that even closely resembled a smile. Her Texas Tech women's basketball team had just suffered a 70-55 loss at Texas to end the regular season - it also was the Lady Raiders' ninth consecutive loss on the road - so the players were in an understandably somber mood. But when the Lady Raiders' coach told them they would likely face the Longhorns again to open the Big 12 Conference Tournament, Curry said her players immediately perked up. And their long faces suddenly turned into happy ones.
