Baseball: Game 2 Goes to OU

The Longhorns suffered a 5-3 loss to the Sooners in Norman on Saturday.

In front of a season-high crowd of 1,808 at L. Dale Mitchell Park, the No. 16 Texas Longhorns fell to the Oklahoma Sooners 5-3 in Big 12 Conference baseball action.

Michael Torres jump started the Longhorns (20-10, Big 12 6-5) in the top of the first inning with a leadoff single through the right side. Travis Tucker singled to left centerfield moving Torres to third and reached second on the throw in from the outfielder. Brandon Belt singled up the middle plating both Torres and Tucker to stake UT a 2-0 lead.

The Sooners (22-9-1, Big 12 3-4-1) chipped into the lead during the home half of the first inning. Jamie Johnson bounced a triple off the leftfield wall and an RBI single to centerfield by Aljay Davis plated Johnson for OU's first run of the game.

Casey Johnson notched the equalizer for Oklahoma in the bottom of the fourth with a solo home run over the rightfield fence.

Oklahoma claimed its first lead of the game with two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. Jamie Johnson reached on an infield hopper to second base. Davis laid a bunt down the third base line to reach first and advance Johnson to second. An RBI single to rightfield by Mike Gosse scored Johnson and put runners on the corners. J.T. Wise pushed Davis across with an RBI single to centerfield to give OU the 4-2 lead.

The Sooners added a run to extend their lead to 5-2 in the bottom of the sixth. Matt Harughty drew a leadoff walk and was brought home on a Tyson Seng single to shallow centerfield.

Texas trimmed a run off the lead in the seventh inning. Preston Clark hit a leadoff single and stole second. A groundout by Kyle Russell advanced Clark to third and another groundout by Cameron Rupp brought home the run.

Torres extended his team-high hitting streak to 17 games going 2-for-4 with one run scored. The streak is the eighth longest in school history. Tucker went 2-for-4 with one run and Belt went 1-for-4 with two RBI.

Kenn Kasparek (1-2) was issued the loss, pitching five innings allowing five runs on seven hits and two walks while striking out five. Chance Ruffin pitched three strong innings of shutout relief allowing just one hit while striking out four.

The pitcher of record, Andrew Doyle (5-2) went seven innings allowing three runs on seven hits with three walks and two strikeouts.

Davis and Jamie Johnson each had a pair of hits to lead the Sooners.

Texas returns to L. Dale Mitchell Park for the finale of the three-game series against Oklahoma with a 1 p.m. start time.
