Texas Considering Offer for '09 Receiver

The Texas Longhorns currently have one receiver, Eisenhower's Greg Timmons, committed for the Class of 2009, but that could change. Uzoma Nwachukwu will be at a Texas camp this summer and has been told by Longhorn coaches that "an offer is possible."

It's been a successful spring for four star wide receiver Uzoma Nwachukwu and his Allen High School teammates. After a quick exit from the playoffs last year, the Eagles are working hard this offseason and they hope last year's experience will prepare them for the long haul in 2008.

"We learned from it, and used it to motivate us this offseason," Nwachukwu said. "We lacked experience at key positions last year. Some of us are seniors now and it's our time to step up and lead and I think we established good leadership on the team this spring."

On a personal level, Nwachukwu focused his spring workouts on improving his game and executing changes in the Eagle offensive game plan.

"My focus in the past has been to run precise routes and beating my man one-on-one," Nwachukwu said. "This spring, we worked more on running zone routes and reading the defense and taking what the coverage gives us."

It's also been a very good spring from a recruiting standpoint for the talented blue chip receiver. He has numerous offers in hand from schools such as Oklahoma, Texas A&M, Notre Dame, Arizona State, Ole' Miss, Louisville, Wisconsin, and Nebraska. Until recently, his top schools were Texas A&M, OU and Notre Dame, but Nwachukwu said that could change now that the Texas Longhorns have started showing him serious interest.

This weekend, Nwachukwu will head down to Austin for a UT camp and there's a possibly that he'll leave with a scholarship offer to Texas.

"Coach Kennedy says they love me and have noticed me ever since they recruited my teammate Dan Buckner, but they are tight on numbers," Nwachukwu. "They want to bring me in for their camps and take a closer look. They say an offer is possible, but they can't promise anything right now."

Asked if an offer from Texas would vault the Longhorns into the hunt for his signature, Nwachukwu said it's an offer that would be seriously considered.

"You always have to look at Texas if they offer with their facilities and success," Nwachukwu said. "They've had so much success at wide receiver with Roy Williams and Limas Sweed , but I wouldn't say I'd jump on it if they offered. They would move into that top group on my list."

Sitting in that top group right now are Texas A&M, Oklahoma and Notre Dame. In regard to Texas A&M, Nwachukwu says he's getting that comfort level with the coaches and the offense they will run under Mike Sherman.

"I've gotten to know all of the coaches at A&M. I call Coach Jordan, Coach Cromwell, and Coach Sherman all the time and talk about the offense and what they plan to do," Nwachukwu said. "With Sherman, you know he has a great plan on offense. He's done it in the pros. He likes to throw the ball. It will be interesting to see what they do this fall because they have two great running backs."

Nwachukwu also shared some insights into Oklahoma head coach Bob Stoops and the head man at Notre Dame Charlie Weis.

"It may surprise people, but Coach Stoops is really a funny, laid back guy. They are implementing the spread with a no huddle offense which fits my skills," Nwachukwu said. "When I talk to Coach Weis, I almost get star struck. He's like a celebrity."

Nwachukwu will get his chance to meet Weis and tour the Notre Dame campus in a couple of weeks when he travels to South Bend for an unofficial visit on June 17-18. He also has plans to see Colorado on June 14 and he's still trying to schedule possible visits to Arkansas along with return trips to OU and Texas A&M.

Nwachukwu indicated that he would like to make a decision on a school choice at the end of the summer after another round of unofficial visits. However, if he's not completely comfortable about making a decision this summer, he won't force it and will make that choice when he's ready.
