Slocum: 'Tragedy' Besets Aggies Monday (UPDATED)

The Texas A&M football team is now contending with an unspecified "tragedy" that occurred early Monday morning, a somber head coach R. C. Slocum reported during the weekly Big 12 conference call among league coaches.

"We had a tragedy on the team this morning," Slocum said. "Out of respect for the family, because I haven't had a chance to talk to them yet, I won't go into details or give names. We'll have details later on today about the incident I am referring to."

Although unrelated, the incident occurred on the morning after nearly 5,000 attended an unofficial, off-campus "bonfire" that a student group organized throughout the year. Texas A&M officials canceled the annual tradition preceding the Texas game after the 1999 collapse of the structure killed 12 and injured 27.

Texas and Texas A&M meet for the 109th time in college football's third-oldest rivalry at 11 a.m. (CST, ABC) at Royal-Memorial Stadium.
