'Spread' Too Thin
Four of college football's top six offensive teams are currently in the Big 12 Conference. That's just part of the reason Texas defensive coordinator Will Muschamp said his job is now more difficult than his previous stint in the NFL.

Rice a frequent salve for UT rushing game
Austin American-Statesman
The Rice defense often has a therapeutic effect on an ailing Texas rushing game. Just go back to last year, when three Longhorns runners collectively averaged 5.7 yards a carry in a 58-14 victory over the Owls. Or try 2006. Texas won 52-7 and two UT backs surpassed 100 yards, with the offense gaining 333 on the ground. It represented the only time in 2006 that any Texas back achieved 100 yards. UT coaches are hoping for a similar, soothing result Saturday when the seventh-ranked Longhorns meet Rice at Royal-Memorial Stadium.

Dallas officials hope $57 million renovation gets Cotton Bowl back in game
Dallas Morning News
The Cotton Bowl at Fair Park is thick with the past, a place of names such as Doak Walker and Bear Bryant, of championships that will be long remembered and games that are all but forgotten. Still, in the morning sun Tuesday, with the light shining off the benches of its newly constructed upper decks, the Cotton Bowl's past didn't seem to hold all the sway for once.

Texas Longhorns' Jordan Shipley certainly has a fave five
Fort Worth Star-Telegram
When Texas receiver Jordan Shipley gets a free moment from football, he usually spends it hunting or fishing near his home in Burnet. So it's no surprise that his list of dream vacations looks like a National Geographic special.

Rice receiver Dillard battles case of dropped passes
Houston Chronicle
After Rice produced another miraculous fourth-quarter rally against Memphis two weekends ago, the ball Owls senior receiver Jarett Dillard dropped in the first quarter was reduced to an insignificant footnote. When Dillard's Velcro hands failed him twice more at Vanderbilt last Saturday, the touchdown he couldn't corral against the Tigers proved to be something more sinister than a fluke. For the first time in his record-shattering career, Dillard appears vulnerable and mistake-prone.

Rice loses another player to injury
Houston Chronicle
The Owls' defense continues to be crippled by injuries, with cornerback Brandon King the latest member of that unit to join the injured list.

Darius Terrell: Four Offers and Counting
DeSoto High School produces Division I football players year after year, but their crop for 2010 could be one of the best in recent memory. Headlining the Eagles on the offensive side of the ball is Darius Terrell. The talented wide receiver has already picked up four offers and is hearing from several other programs.

Simms is the perfect mentor for Young
Austin American-Statesman
Vince Young may not know it, but the Tennessee Titans' signing of Chris Simms is the best thing that's happened to him this season.

Lions look at RBs, including Alexander and Benson

According to published reports, former Pro Bowler Shaun Alexander was one of several running backs to meet with the Lions on Tuesday. Alexander, a former Seattle Seahawks star, worked out for the coaching staff at the team's practice facility. Former Chicago Bears runner Cedric Benson, a first-round draft pick in 2005, and free-agent Vernand Morency, who previously played for the Packers, were also in town to meet with coaches and front office personnel.
