Odessa Permian is one of the most storied high school programs in the nation after being the basis for the book, turned movie, turned TV show Friday Night Lights. Texas has had a commitment from offensive tackle Garret Porter for almost a year. Porter spoke with Burnt Orange Beat about Odessa Permian's record setting season, his commitment, and his future plans.
is Scout.com's #38 ranked offensive tackle in the country. Porter was a 5A All-State selection as a junior and his season has him poised to repeat that feat. In fact, Odessa Permian just finished up its second consecutive undefeated regular season.
"With as much history as OP has had, I am shocked that we are the first team to have back to back undefeated regular seasons," said Porter. "We have made it three rounds deep the last two years and we are hoping to win it all this year."
When asked when he was going to make it down to Austin for his official visit, Porter said, "I have no idea. I hope we are still playing [in the state playoffs] through December. I did make it down to Austin for the Missouri and Oklahoma State games."
"I am still positively committed to Texas, and I will be in Austin in June," said Porter.
Porter picked the Longhorns over offers from around the country that include Texas Tech, Virginia, Arizona and Kansas.
Odessa Permian begins its 5A playoffs by facing 6-4 El Paso El Dorado under the lights on Friday night.
