The Texas Longhorns have seven current commits and three other prospects playing in the game. Jarvis Jones, the Columbus, Georgia Carver High School product, is the lone player with a Texas Longhorn connection on the East squad. Jones, Scout.com's #3 SAM linebacker in the country, brings a big body and even bigger athleticism to his linebacker play. Jones is scheduled to officially visit Texas on the weekend of January 23. Florida, Texas, LSU, and Georgia are the finalists for Jones. He will wear #45 for the East squad.
The West squad has all seven Texas Longhorn commits that are playing in the ballgame. There will be four defensive Longhorns: LB Tariq Allen (#43), DB Marcus Davis (#28), DT Calvin Howell (#99), and Alex Okafor (#80). Those four will have plenty of opportunity to try to sway the remaining two uncommitted West defensive players that Texas is recruiting. The top defensive end in the country, Arizona's Devon Kennard (#42), will not play in the game due to injury but is still making the trip. Kennard officially visited Texas on December 19. Kennard is down to Texas and USC. Gadsden, Alabama's corner Dre Kirkpatrick (#13) is Scout.com's #3 rated cornerback in the country and is still considering Alabama, Florida, and Texas among others. He, like Jarvis Jones, is scheduled to visit Texas officially on January 23.
Kirkpatrick is one of six finalists of the 2009 U.S. Army Player of the Year Award. The U.S. Army Player of the Year will be crowned during the U.S. Army Awards Dinner on Friday, January 2, 2009 in San Antonio. The winner will be presented with the Ken Hall Trophy, modeled after Ken "Sugar Land Express" Hall, high school football's all-time leading rusher.
Burnt Orange Beat will be in San Antonio to report on several practices this week.
