Recruiting: Coach Says No Massey UT Trip Planned

As the recruiting world turns, you can certainly find some interesting developments to say the least. RBs Lendale White and Reggie Bush both committing to USC this weekend and out of nowhere comes Richuel Massey talked up as a potential running back prospect for The University. But despite reports placing Massey in Austin for an official visit this coming weekend, Hillsboro head coach Mark Erwin scoffs at such a claim.

"I just got off the phone with SMU head coach Phil Bennet," Erwin said. "He just got wind of the rumors flying around and I've been trying to calm him down."

"As far as I know, Richuel's not going to Texas this weekend and I don't know how all of this got started," Erwin continued. "I know about the rumors coming from the (U.S. Army) game but as to what extent they originated I have no idea."

When informed that other services have Richuel Massey on record as stating that he was headed to Austin to visit with Mack Brown and Co. this weekend, the Hillsboro coach told IT, "I know, I've heard the rumors and they came from the San Antonio All-Star game just this past weekend."

"We haven't even been contacted by Texas."

Last time you spoke with Richuel Massey was...?

"I just spoke with Richuel yesterday (Wednesday)," Erwin said. "He told me he was going to SMU this weekend and not to Texas. He hasn't mentioned anything about going to Texas, so you got me."

Still seems a little strange, don't you think?

"Well, I think he's going to be an SMU Mustang," said Erwin. "They're the guys who have wanted him all along and that's where he's committed to. You heard what they said on the TV this weekend about him... that he doesn't feel like he'd get a chance to play there (Texas)?"

Yes, IT was in the Alamodome Press Box where there were a few TVs. After the game got a little bit boring we turned the volume up to see if Trev Alberts would stick his foot in his mouth like he does so often and...

"Well, you never know what Richuel might have said this past weekend," Erwin said. "You know how kids are sometimes, but when I asked him if he was going to Texas this weekend he said, 'No'."

Stay tuned.
