Texas after Pleasant for Gridiron

The Texas Longhorns are showing serious interest in 2011 athlete Everett Pleasant. The Atascocita junior-to-be is one of the top rising football prospects in state regardless of classification. Burnt Orange Beat spoke with the talented multi-sport star.

Everett Pleasant burst onto the sports scene as a freshman at Atascocita playing on the varsity basketball team. At that time, it was common thought that the then 6-5, 200-pound power forward would be a basketball player only. Those plans changed in 2008 as Pleasant decided to play football and while raw on the gridiron, has almost instantly become one of the top 2011 prospects in the state.

Pleasant played receiver and on special teams as a sophomore for head coach Dean Colbert, but will see his role expanded as a junior. Pleasant, who caught passes for just over 100 yards on a team that struggled at the quarterback position, is quickly becoming a physical force with terrific speed.

"I'm 6-5 and I weigh 216 pounds right now," said Pleasant who made several big hits on special teams as a sophomore. "I'm going to play receiver and safety this year."

The program that has shown the most interest in Pleasant on the football field is the Texas Longhorns. On June 14, Pleasant attended the Longhorns second mini-camp working out at a new position.

"I was nervous before the camp. It was my first camp. When I got loose, I did my thing. Texas had me work out at tight end. It was my first time playing tight end from a three-point stance. I had to get adjusted, but I got better as the camp went on. I think I did well. I ran a 4.56 in the forty," Pleasant said.

Pleasant returned to Austin a few days later with his the Houston Hoops AAU program for the Texas Elite Camp June 18-19. It wasn't the first trip to the camp for Pleasant.

"The camp gets better every year. I had fun with the guys and saw some friends. I talked to Sheldon McClellan and Julien Lewis, who I have known for a while from AAU," Pleasant said.

Pleasant, who averaged 14.7 points and around eight rebounds per game earning 19-5A first team all-district honors in 2008, says while he loves both sports, he will make a decision after his junior season on one.

"Man, that is a good question about football or basketball in college. I love basketball and I've been playing since I was seven years old. I think this is my last year playing two sports. After this year, I'll decide on one probably," Pleasant said.

As far as an early leader for his services, Pleasant said one team stands out.

"In football, Texas is the school I like the most. I've always liked UConn in basketball," Pleasant said.

The immensely talented 2011 prospect was named honorable mention 19-5A on the gridiron in addition to a first team selection on the hardwood.

Everett Pleasant Scouting Report

Pleasant is a legit 6-4.5/6-5 and 215-220 pounds. Blessed with explosive power and leaping ability and very long arms, he is a big time football prospect that will very likely be 6-5 and 250-260 in the coming years. On the football field, Pleasant is very physical and looks to make big hits on special teams. As a receiver, he is very raw, but runs right by defenders.

At the next level, Pleasant will be recruited as an athlete that could line-up at defensive end, outside linebacker or tight end. Because of his aggressiveness, big time leaping ability (dunks in traffic with power), ability to play the ball in the air and legit 4.6 speed, he could be a true difference maker at the tight end position.
