The state of Texas hasn't produced as many tight end prospects in recent years as normal primarily due to the explosion of spread offenses. The class of 2011 looks to be deeper at the tight end position than others and one of the top prospects is Chris Barnett of Dallas Maceo Smith.
, a 6-4, 230-pounder, has checked out a number of campuses over the summer and recent months and will be watching the tight end play closely at several schools in the next couple of years.
The younger brother of 2009 Texas signee Eryon Barnett excels at defensive end as well as tight end and will likely have some programs chase him as a defensive prospect.
In fact as a sophomore, Barnett made his mark on defense tallying 71 tackles, seven tackles for loss, and two sacks. He recorded 11 receptions for 135 yards and score on offense.
With heavy interest from the likes of Miami, Oklahoma, Tennessee, USC, Texas, Oklahoma State, TCU, Oregon, Wake Forest and others, there is little doubt the junior will have his pick of top programs.
