Week 2 Prognostications

After a great opening weekend of college football that started on Thursday and ended late on Monday night, week two settles in with some yawners and bye weeks. Burnt Orange Beat publishers break down all of the Big 12 games and four other national games of interest. Before the kickoff, no one can be wrong!

The Big 12 started out an impressive 10-1 on Saturday but Sunday's loss by Dan Hawkins's Colorado squad pushed the final opening weekend tally to 10-2 for the conference. Two victorious squads, Baylor and Texas A&M, take week two off to bask in the opening weekend victories.

Colorado @ Toledo
Friday, 8 pm

Commentary: Colorado looks to get back on track after Sunday's loss to in-state rival Colorado State. If the Buffs are to win ten games this year, on the road at Toledo has to be one of them. The short week is not going to help the Buffs.

BRAGGonUT prediction: Colorado 31, Toledo 30
GerryH prediction: Colorado 30, Toledo 28

Iowa @ Iowa State
Saturday, 11:05 am

Commentary: Iowa needed two blocked field goal attempts to top Northern Iowa and Iowa State is no Northern Iowa. I expect dreary weather and dreary football.

BRAGGonUT prediction: Iowa State 14, Iowa 13
GerryH prediction: Iowa 27, Iowa State 21

Arkansas State @ #22 Nebraska
Saturday, 1 pm

Commentary: The Indians hung a 61-0 score on Mississippi Valley State, while Nebraska won 49-3 over Florida Atlantic. Bo Pelini was not happen with his defensive effort last week, but the troops should be ready to go in week 2.

BRAGGonUT prediction: Nebraska 42, Arkansas State 10
GerryH prediction: Nebraska 42, Arkansas State 13

#2 Texas @ Wyoming
Saturday, 2:30 pm

Commentary: The game is being billed as the biggest sporting event in Wyoming history, so who am I to argue. The Cowboys will bring all they have for 10 minutes before succumbing to the Longhorn athleticism.

BRAGGonUT prediction: Texas 52, Wyoming 10
GerryH prediction: Texas 45, Wyoming 17

Houston @ #5 Oklahoma State
Saturday, 2:30 pm

Commentary: The Cowboys are coming off of their biggest season-opening win in history and see a letdown coming. Houston can score on anyone, so I am expecting a shootout in Stillwater.

BRAGGonUT prediction: Oklahoma State 48, Houston 45
GerryH prediction: Oklahoma State 48, Houston 27

Idaho State @ #13 Oklahoma
Saturday, 6 pm

Commentary: In case you missed it, Oklahoma lost their opener to BYU and also lost their Heisman winning quarterback. The Bengals held Arizona State to 50 last week, but OU has a point to make.

BRAGGonUT prediction: Oklahoma 56, Idaho State 0
GerryH prediction: Oklahoma 48, Idaho State 0

Bowling Green @ #25 Missouri
Saturday, 6 pm

Commentary: Missouri may have had the most impressive win of week one, so the question is will the young team back it up or let it go to their heads?

BRAGGonUT prediction: Missouri 38, Bowling Green 14
GerryH prediction: Missouri 45, Bowling Green 28

Kansas State @ Louisiana-Lafayette
Saturday, 6 pm

Commentary: Kansas State on the road to face Louisiana-Lafayette? You bet. A Kansas State team that struggled to hold of Massachusets at home combined with being in a true re-tooling mode will get the job done, but not without a struggle.

BRAGGonUT prediction: Kansas State 38, Louisiana-Lafayette 32
GerryH prediction: Kansas State 27, Louisiana-Lafayette 20

Rice @ Texas Tech
Saturday, 6 pm

Commentary: Texas Tech did nothing but struggle last week, but Rice got blown out against UAB. The Red Raiders will improve on offense this week. Potts doesn't turn the ball over three times and more of Harrison Jeffers at running back equals more points against a Rice secondary that wasn't tested last week. Detron Lewis will have a big day.

BRAGGonUT prediction: Texas Tech 51, Rice 28
GerryH prediction: Texas Tech 48, Rice 16

#24 Kansas @ UTEP
Saturday, 6:30 pm

Commentary: Kansas heads to UTEP 1-0 and will return 2-0. UTEP lost at home to Buffalo 23-17 last week. Not a good sign. Kansas will score plenty behind Todd Reesing. Jake Sharp will go over 100 yards for a second straight game. This looks like Kansas' first round win in six seasons.

BRAGGonUT prediction: Kansas 43, UTEP 9
GerryH prediction: Kansas 38, UTEP 13

The second weekend of the season does not have quite as many interesting non-Big 12 games so we are going to cut back to four national games. However, the slate does start on Thursday night and does have the game of September in USC and Ohio State.

Clemson @ #15 Georgia Tech
Thursday, 6:30 pm

Commentary: Clemson star C.J. Spiller's health is in question, but the Tigers have a talented young quarterback and a terrific blend of size and speed on defense. Clemson signal caller Kyle Parker will burst onto the ACC scene tonight. Georgia Tech, playing at home, will still be too much in the fourth quarter.

BRAGGonUT prediction: Georgia Tech 27, Clemson 14
GerryH prediction: Georgia Tech 28, Clemson 24

#18 Notre Dame @ Michigan
Saturday, 2:30 pm

Commentary: This is not your grandfather's ND-Michigan game. These two storied programs have had enough rebuilding projects to have this game sponsored by Home Depot. Oh, look, it is.

BRAGGonUT prediction: Notre Dame 21, Michigan 17
GerryH prediction: Notre Dame 31, Michigan 17

UCLA @ Tennessee
Saturday, 3 pm

Commentary: Tennessee hosts the Bruins with SEC bragging rights on the line and more momentum headed to The Swamp next week. UCLA is getting better, but isn't ready to pull this one off. More Bryce Brown to go with Montario Hardesty is big trouble for UCLA.

BRAGGonUT prediction: Tennessee 35, UCLA 21
GerryH prediction: Tennessee 34, UCLA 20

#3 USC @ #8 Ohio State
Saturday, 7 pm

Commentary:Matt Barkley is in a tough spot, but Pete Carroll is master of having a team loose in big games. This is a huge game for sophomore quarterback Terrelle Pryor. It's time for Pryor to really become one of the top players in college football.

BRAGGonUT prediction: Ohio State 28, USC 24
GerryH prediction: Ohio State 24, USC 20

Last week's results
BRAGGonUT 12-5
GerryH 10-7
