Thompson ready for three-peat

Kendall Thompson and Carthage are coming off back-to-back state titles, but it's another Texas commitment's team that edged out the Bulldogs for the Class 3A top spot in the rankings. Come inside to get Thompson's reaction.

Texas commitment Kendall Thompson and the Carthage Bulldogs are 30-2 over the last two years. They have won two state championships and arguably return their three most important players from last season. But yet among all the accomplishments, they still do not find themselves at the top of the Class 3A Associated Press Rankings that were released on Thursday. Edging him out, Jaxon Shipley and Brownwood.

"I'm not even sure how it happens. It seems like it happens every year," said Thompson to "It motivates us a lot. Every year they do it. Last year we were also coming of a state championship and they didn't have us No. 1."

Thompson and Carthage open up play next Friday against Jacksonville. The Bulldogs return four starters on both sides of the ball, with their quarterback (Anthony Morgan), leading receiver (Jalen Claibourne), and Thompson all back. Morgan almost threw for 3000 yards last season with Claibourne going over a 1000 receiving.

"Practices have been going great. These are the best practices I have experienced at Carthage. I feel like our defense is way better than last years," said Thompson. "The offense has to tighten up a bit, but they are coming along great. I'm pretty excited to get going."

The last time caught up with the senior was at the FoxSports state 7-on-7 championship. A man among boys, Thompson was terrorizing defenses in the middle.

"I just really tried to stay in shape and work on my footwork this off season. I'm just trying to make sure that I'm a leader for the younger guys. I'm not interested in anything but winning another state championship on my way out," said the linebacker.

Thompson plans to hit a couple Texas games this fall, but has yet to make a schedule of which ones. As far as his thoughts on being committed to Texas going into his senior year: "People know you wherever you go. They talk to you about committing to Texas. It's great. The feeling of being committed to the University of Texas is just great."
