As senior wide receiver, Corey Jones gets set to graduate following this season, Jason Candle is preparing to recruit the next slot receiver. 2017 wide receiver, Chauncy Smart of Auburndale, Fla. runs a 4.37 40-yard dash and says Toledo does rank highly for him.
The coaches love me," Smart stated on Toledo's involvement in his recruitment, "Coach Candle wants me there badly and I keep contact with all of the coaches, we have a nice bond."
Toledo would offer Smart in March to become one of his first few offers. Now, the 5'8", 160-pound playmaker has fourteen to his credit, with a recent offer coming from Youngstown State on Thursday. Due to his Florida location, the only schools that Smart has had the opportunity to visit thus far have been UCF, Florida, and South Florida but Smart says he will be visiting the Rockets in the fall.
"Toledo is a really good place, I see myself going there and setting the Mid-American Conference on fire," Smart added.
Smart's speed is something that a lot of school's would love to add to their rosters. For Toledo, with Corey Jones getting set to graduate, they'll be looking to add speed and will lose the special teams presence of the senior. Therefore, Smart would be an ideal fit in the Rockets' fast-paced offense and perhaps, punt return schemes as well.
In prior years, when Jason Candle was the offensive coordinator for Matt Campbell at Toledo, Candle would lead the recruiting charge in Florida. Now, as the head man, Candle continues to recruit the Sunshine State hard and Smart appears to be one of the top targets from the state right now.
"I really like Toledo because of their great academic program and because they send people to the next level."
We'll keep you posted on Smart's recruitment as a decision nears.
