Last Sunday, Toledo saw plenty of campers from all over the country participate in Toledo’s basketball camp hosted by the Rocket coaching staff.
One of Toledo’s top performers during the camp was 2018 Detroit, MI (Edison Academy) Small Forward Deante Johnson. He made the trip down to Toledo from Detroit and walked away with an offer from the Toledo coaching staff.
“I was very excited to get my first offer especially from a school like Toledo," Johnson said. “I got the offer on Sunday and I was at Toledo for a team camp and the coaches liked the way I played, so after the game they came to me and my coach and told me the good news.”
Johnson has not had a chance to talk and bond with the Toledo coaching staff yet. But during his time at the camp, he took time to talk to Toledo’s head coach Tod Kowalczyk about his offer from them and about their basketball program.
“I'm still getting to know Coach Kowalczyk and the rest of the coaching staff, but he seems like he can get the job done. I think Toledo has a good program and I'm going to look into it to see if it's a fit for me. We've only talked a few times and we only talked about basketball and school.”
Toledo and Detroit Mercer are the only programs as of right now who are showing interest and recruiting Johnson. However, he is looking to visit a bunch of schools this summer and is currently in the process of planning visits.
“I want to visit Toledo this summer, we’re making plans to visit and I want to see academic buildings and dorms that Toledo has. However, I am still making plans to visit other schools, I been thinking about it and I'm researching and making a list of schools I will visit.”
