Jake Webb Commits to Cory Mee and Toledo

Toledo Baseball is looking ahead and focusing on the future of the program. On Monday, the Rockets received a commitment from right-handed pitcher Jake Webb.

After a below average season in the Spring of 2016, the Toledo Rockets' baseball program is looking to regroup and get back amongst the top of the Mid-American Conference. On Monday, the Rockets received a verbal commitment from right-handed pitcher, Jake Webb of Fairborn, Ohio. Toledo Scout publisher, Zach Harig caught up with him.

The 6-foot-4, 225-pounder held offers from Cuyahoga Community College, Eastern Illinois, and Toledo but fell in love with the Glass City on a recent visit.

"I visited last Wednesday and loved everything about Toledo, from the coaches to the facilities," Webb stated. "I liked the coaches a lot, Coach Mee and Coach Bradford are awesome coaches and I can't wait to join the family up there."

The Fairborn High School product features a four-seam, two-seam, change-up and curveball in his arsenal and has hit 90 MPH on the radar gun while being consistently around 87 or 88 MPH.

"My strength is just overpowering guys and being able to hide the ball very well and just missing barrels on swings," Webb stated.

Due to the dominant fastball, Webb says he throws about 90-percent fastballs when he's on the mound. The Rockets are led by soon-to-be senior Ross Achter on the mound who featured a 3.10 ERA last season in 15 starts. Aside from Achter and freshman Michael Jacob, the Rockets struggled to find consistency on the mound, something that Webb can hopefully bring to Scott Park.

"The coaches tell me that there is so much more room for improvement and that I can be better than what I am right now," Webb told us.

Last season, as a junior at Fairborn, Webb was first-team GWOC South, honorable mention All-Area en route to breaking the school record in season strikeouts and ERA as well. The ace would also sport a 1.20 ERA with 72 strikeouts by season's end.

Webb will look to make an impact immediately in Toledo as he looks to improve with the help of Coach Mee and Bradford. We'll keep you posted on Toledo Baseball as the spring rolls around.
