As National Signing Day approaches, the Toledo Rockets continue to close in on the No. 1 class in the Mid-American Conference. With the Rockets featuring 24 current commits (which is subject to change), they aren't quite done in the 2017 class. On Sunday evening, longtime Toledo commit and Massilion offensive lineman, Vincent McConnell flipped commitments to Cincinnati. However, Jason Candle and the Rockets have been after another top lineman in the class in Kentucky native, Woodford Lankford.
Lankford, a six-four, 250-pound guard out of Lexington Catholic High School possesses tremendous size and ability to anchor the trenches at the next level. In fact, the Toledo coaching staff keyed in on Lankford as a key target back in late spring when they hosted him and his father on a visit which Lankford called, "a great visit."
Despite liking Toledo, Lankford ended his recruitment process by verbally committing to Western Kentucky before reopening his recruitment on January 17. Now, the Rockets are right back in the thick of things to land the No. 69 offensive guard in the nation.
After speaking with Lankford on Sunday, he tells us he will be announcing his decision just moments before signing at around 3:30 pm ET on Wednesday. Right now, Lankford tells us he will decide between Toledo, Marshall and Eastern Kentucky "as of right now."
"My recruitment is going well. I'm feeling confident that I will have made the right choice for myself on a decision," Lankford told us Sunday.
Cincinnati has shown some interest in the previous weeks and is a team to watch out for in the coming hours. They have not offered yet, but a Bearcat offer could change things. As of right now, we expect Lankford to choose the Rockets. We'll keep you posted.
