At 6'4", 225-pounds, John Hines of Southwest Mississippi Community College continues to climb up lists of several schools. Toledo has become the next offer for the former Montgomery Park Crossing high school product, adding to an already impressive offer sheet containing Southern Mississippi, Texas-San Antonio, Arkansas State, Troy and Colorado State. While somewhat unfamiliar with Northwest Ohio, Hines does know a few players suiting up for the Rockets.
"I know Tre'Shaun Wilson and incoming freshman, Jamal Turner along with Nathan Givhan, they're all from my hometown but I am not familiar with Toledo," Hines told us. "I only know their base defense is a 4-2-5 and that defense is a good fit for me."
As Toledo bursts onto the scene for Hines, they'll have a little bit of work to do to catch the schools that have been on his radar list for some time now, especially his two favorites.
"At this moment, Troy and Arkansas State are my favorites," he said, "I like Troy because it's close to home and coach Neal Brown came in and turned the whole program around in a small amount of time, plus they produce good defensive linemen. I like Arkansas State because of their recognition of breeding pass rushers and they've won the Sun Belt last year over Troy."
With a solid frame and production at the JUCO level, Hines is quickly becoming a hot name on the recruiting trail. Hines also has the versatility to play from several different stances and get after the quarterback on third and long, yet he also takes pride in his run stopping ability.
Toledo has the potential to land another Alabama native as Hines continues to gain knowledge about one of the most consistent programs in the Mid-American Conference.
"The Toledo offer means a lot to me, it was really a surprise," Hines said.
Once Hines gets on campus in the Glass City, things could change in his recruitment. There is no time table yet for a visit, stay tuned to Scout for more.
