One of the biggest needs on defense heading into 2008 is the need for a good pass rush. Toledo has added speed to the defensive line, and they will see the return of senior Sean Williamson and sophomore Douglas Westbrook after they both missed most of last season with injuries.
The other piece to the puzzle is signing quality defensive lineman in the 2009 recruiting class.
Blaine Burgess of Pickerington Central is one prospect the Rockets have targeted for 2009. Burgess is a 6-3, 255 pound defensive end with 4.84 speed. He recently updated Rocket Digest on his recruitment.
He attended summer camps at Ohio University, Miami University, Cincinnati, and Ohio State. He hoped to go to Toledo's camp, but could not because of a scheduling conflict.
"During the summer workouts, I mainly focused on maintaining speed while building muscle, and I also worked on pass rush techniques," explained Blaine.
And as far as his recruitment, two schools have been in contact with Blaine quite a bit. "I still haven't seen any paperwork on them, but Coach Marrow from Toledo and my recruiting coach from Western Michigan have told Coach Sharrett (Blaine's HS coach) and myself that I have an offer from both of them," Blaine told Rocket Digest.
UT tight ends coach Vince Marrow recruits the Pickerington area of Ohio for the Rockets, and he has been in contact with Blaine on a regular basis. "I do talk to Coach Marrow from time to time and he is always positive about getting me to come and see some games this year and have another chance to walk around campus," Blaine said.
Blaine said it has been a while since he has been to UT's campus, but from what he remembers it is very impressive. He also noted that the indoor practice facility that Toledo is building is another thing that would sell him on coming to Toledo.
Despite the verbal offers from Toledo and Western Michigan, Blaine is quick to point out that he does not have any favorites yet. "I'm really trying to focus on playing well and sending some more tape out to different schools and see who is interested," Blaine said. He plans on waiting until after his senior season this fall before narrowing his list and making a commitment.
Stay tuned to Rocket Digest as we keep you updated on Blaine's senior season and his status as a Toledo Rocket football prospect.
