Toledo senior free safety Tyrrell Herbert has been selected to particpate in the 3rd annual Texas vs the Nation All-Star Challenge. This game replaced the Hula Bowl as one of the premier post-season all star games.
Tyrrell Herbert (6-2, 201 pounds) recently finished a great career at the University of Toledo. He busted onto the scene as a sophomore in 2005, starting all 12 games for Toledo and recording 94 tackles. He was also tied for seventh in the nation with five forced fumbles, and he intercepted a pass in Toledo 45-13 GMAC Bowl victory over UTEP.
As a junior in 2006 he led the team with 74 tackles and was 2nd on the team with three interceptions. He was also one of the team captains, depite only being a junior.
In 2007 Tyrrell suffered a setback with a season ending injury in the opener against Purdue. However, Tyrrell came back stronger than ever in 2008. He was third on the team with 79 tackles, and he led the team with four interceptions, while also forcing two fumbles.
Probably the biggest play of his career was just this season as a senior. Toledo was playing Michigan at the Big House in Ann Arbor, MI. The Wolverines were driving and threatening to score when Tyrrell stepped in front of the defender and picked the ball off in the end zone. He raced the distance for a touchdown to give the Rockets the lead, which led to a 13-10 Toledo victory.
Tyrrell was nominated for the Pontiac Game Changing Performance of the week for that interception return for a touchdown, and he won the vote to become the week's Game Changing Performance.
Now that his career at Toledo is over, Tyrrell is looking to the professional ranks to continue his football career. He has been selected to play in the Texas vs the Nation All-Star Challenge. The game will be played in El Paso, TX on January 31st, 2009 at the Sun Bowl on the campus of Texas El Paso (UTEP).
Good luck to Tyrrell in the All-Star Challenge, and good luck in your quest to play in the NFL.
