Coach Beckman and his staff are looking to bolster the Rockets secondary this recruiting season. The Rockets have offers out to defensive backs Ricky Steele, Paris Bruner, Brandon Driver, and Jermaine Robinson. And Indianapolis Pike's Troy Smith could be the next defensive back to receive an offer from Toledo.
"I know Mike Ward pretty well," Pike High School football coach Derek Moyers told Rocket Digest yesterday. "He recruited this area for Bowling Green when he was there. He came in last Tuesday or Wednesday and I showed him Troy's film and he was excited at what he saw."
Ward, Toledo's new defensive coordinator, was excited enough to invite Troy to Toledo's campus for an official visit. He will be making that visit on January 16th.
Troy Smith is 5-10 and 175 pounds. He played wide receiver and cornerback for Pike High School this year. He recorded 41 tackles and had 8 interceptions, with 2 of those INT's being returned back for touchdowns. He's also a very fast player. "His most recent 40 time was cloced at 4.38 seconds," said Coach Moyers.
Moyers had nothing but good things to say about Smith. "He's a tremendous athlete with tremendous speed," said Moyers. "He's a long strider so it doesn't look like he is going as fast as he is. He has great foot work and he enjoys watching film," Moyers concluded.
At the present time Smith does not have any official scholarship offers, but four schools are recruiting him. Along with Toledo, Iowa has recently joined the sweepstakes in recruiting Smith. He will visit Iowa this weekend. Cincinnati and Louisville are also recruiting him, and he will visit them in January.
Smith also runs track for Pike High School, competing in the 100m, 200m and 4 x 100m.
Stay tuned to Rocket Digest as we keep you updated on Troy Smith's status as a Toledo Rocket football prospect.
