Updated: Troy Smith Commits to Toledo

Rocket Digest has learned that Indianapolis Pike defensive back Troy Smith has given his verbal commitment to the Toledo Rockets. Read on for more on this commitment and where the Rockets stand for the 2009 football recruiting class.

Indianapolis Pike defensive back Troy Smith committed to Toledo yesterday. The 5-10, 175 pound DB from Pike High School in Indiana chose the Rockets over Ball State. He also had interest from and took an official visit to Iowa.

Troy was recruited to Toledo by assistant coach Mike Ward. Smith recorded 41 tackles and 8 interceptions as a senior this past season at Pike High School.

"Coach Clinkscale came here yesterday and went over the NLI with Troy," said Pike High School football coach Derek Moyers. "Troy is going to greyshirt at Toledo. He is signing his NLI next Wednesday, but he will count towards the 2010 class. He's very excited about Toledo."

Smith, constant with a theme from the new coaching staff at Toledo, has great speed with a 4.40 in the forty yard dash. He joins Ricky Steele (Cincinnati LaSalle), Byron Best (Greenwood, SC), Jason Pinkston (Cleveland Glenville), and Jermaine Robinson (Milford Academy) as defensive back prospects that have committed to Toledo under the new staff.

Robinson is already on campus and expected to play a safety position. Best, Steele, and Pinkston are planning to get to Toledo in the summer and compete for playing time in the secondary, most likely at cornerback. Troy Smith will be on scholarship at Toledo as of January 2010.
