Over the last several years, the tight end position has been a very important part of the Rocket offense. With a new coaching staff and a new offense, Rocket fans are wondering how the tight end position will fit into a new spread offense. The following is a preview of the position heading into spring practices.

Head Coach Tim Beckman recently said that the tight ends will be used a lot in multiple formations in the Rockets new spread offense. Coach Beckman has handed the reigns of the position over to Jason Candle. Candle is the inside receivers and tight ends coach at Toledo.

The first player to look at is Tom Burzine. Burzine will be a senior this fall. At 6-4 and 249 pounds he has pefect size for a tight end in the spread offense. He has the ability to stay in tight and run or pass block, and he has the ability run a route and catch a pass. In 2008, Burzine caught 7 passes for 77 yards.

Matt Fought is a 6-4, 242 pound junior. Fought redshirted in 2006, and then played in seven games in 2007. As a sophomore last season he was the #3 tight end on the depth chart and appeared in 9 games. Matt is expected to be one of three tight ends that will see significant playing time in 2009.

Jerome Jones is a 6-7, 234 pound sophomore. Jones caught one pass in 2008, while appearing in three games. Jones is expected to be one of three tight ends that will see significant playing time in 2009.

Finally is walk on Jared Strait, a 6-2 and 215 pound redshirt freshman. Jared is from Wyandotte, MI where he played his high school football at Roosevelt High School. Spring practices will provide Jared with the opportunity to prove himself in his quest to see playing time during the 2009 season.

While there is not anyone that stands out in this group of tight ends, senior Tom Burzine has a lot of experience and at different times last season he showed he can be a valuable receiver in the Rocket offense.

As spring practices continue through March and into April, expect the battle for #2 on the depth chart to be one of the more entriguing matchups with Matt Fought and Jerome Jones battling it out.
