The recent commitment of point guard Josh Freelove for the 2009 Rocket baskeetball recruiting class is eye-catching. Freelove is a 6-1, 165 pound point guard from Plantation, FL.
This past season he averaged 26.5 points per game and five assists per game. Recently interest started picking up for Freelove, including interest from schools like Nebraska and VCU.
Freelove is a great addition to a class that was already pretty strong with power forward Jordan Dressler and shooting guard Malcolm Griffin leading the class. In fact, Dressler has recently been named a finalist for the Mr Show Me award giving to the state's top basketball player.
This all bodes well for the future of Rocket men's basketball under Coach Cross.
Changing gears to football now, how about that spring game? It was nice to have so many former football players there supporting the program. It was also nice to see the tradition of a true spring football game brought back to Toledo.
The coaching staff is doing an excellent job of promoting the program to the community. Head Coach Tim Beckman is now on Twitter as coachbeckman. Also, assistant coach Alex Golesh is on Twitter as coachgolesh. Both are keeping their profiles up to date with little bits of information about the football program that you wouldn't normally hear about.
Like for instance the other day the team had a home run hitting contest as their weekly competition event that helps promote healthy competition and togetherness/team efforts. Coach Golesh was proud to "tweet" about his team winning the home run contest.
Coach Beckman also has his own facebook page now. You can follow him on facebook at this link - Coach Beckman Facebook Page. He is giving status updates on different things on this page. For instance, he said that DJ Summers scored the most points during the home run hitting contest the other day.
Also, Coach Beckman has his own website now too. It is not officially launching until this summer, but a nice video is up on the page now. You can view this at the following link - www.coachbeckman.com.
It's been great to see the coaching staff so open to Rocket Fans and going out there promoting the program.
