Cardinal Gibbons defensive back Garrett Smith has five Division I scholarship offers, and more could be on the horizon. The Fort Lauderdale, FL native has offers from Toledo, Western Michigan, Central Michigan, Purdue, and Cincinnati. He's also hearing from Pittsburgh, FIU, Middle Tennessee, and Michigan State.

The 5-10, 170 pounder has explosive speed. "In the beginning of the off season I ran a 4.43 at the National Underclassmen Camp," Smith recently told Rocket Digest. Couple that with good cover skills and you have a solid Division I cornerback prospect.

What makes Garrett even more attractive to college coaches is his attention to academics. "My current GPA is a 3.3 and I scored a 1010 on the SAT," Smith said.

Assistant coach Eli Rasheed is recruiting Smith for Toledo. Coach Rasheed was the defensive line coach at FAU before joining Coach Beckman's staff this off season, so he is familiar with the Florida area and Garrett Smith's abilities.

And while Coach Rasheed and the rest of the Rocket staff like what they see in the young defensive back prospect, Smith also likes what he sees in the Rocket football program.

"My thoughts about Toledo is that the school is a nice strong power that many people overlook," said Garrett. He added, "I'm really interested in them."

As his senior year of high school approaches, Garrett does not have a clear picture on when he might make a college decision, but he has developed a favorite in the process. "My favorite of them all will be Toledo, but I do not have any timeframe for a commitment."

Rocket Digest will continue to bring you the latest on Garret Smith and all the other top prospects for the Toledo Rocket 2010 football recruiting class.
