Church Earns Accolades

Toledo senior safety Barry Church came up huge in Toledo's 20-19 victory over Northern Illinois Saturday night. A blocked field goal attempt with just 37 seconds left in the game allowed the Rockets to hang on for victory, and his performance did not go unnoticed.

Barry Church was the man of the hour Saturday night at the Glass Bowl. First he blocked a Northern Illinois extra point, then with just 37 seconds remaining, he blocked a 42 yard field goal attempt by Northern Illinois, giving the Toledo Rockets a 20-19 victory over the Huskies.

For his efforts, Church was named MAC West Division Special Teams Player of the Week. He was also named the Defensive Back Performer of the Week by College Football Performance Awards.

On top of the two blocked kicks, Church recorded 12 tackles and had a bone-jarring hit on Northern Illinois quarterback Chandler Harnish during the 4th quarter.

Barry Church and the Toledo Rockets are now 4-3 overall and 2-1 in MAC play. Despite the loss in conference play, they control their own destiny in the MAC West Division race. Western Michigan (Toledo's lone conference loss) lost their 2nd MAC West Division game Saturday at home to Central Michigan.

Toledo hosts Temple Saturday night at the Glass Bowl. Temple is 3-0 in the MAC thus far, and could provide a huge challenge for the Rockets. A win over temple would go a long way towards the Rockets getting bowl eligible and setting up a showdown with Central Michigan for the MAC West Division Title in three weeks.
