Because the Green Wave plays it's first football game on September 1st, the Green Wave freshmen and varsity will both report on August 6th. The first practice in shorts will be on August 7th.
Look for grayshirt freshman Kelvin Johnson,
6'2 245, a linebacker in high school, to get
a shot at defensive end, a posiiton where Tulane's defense looks to be very thin. True freshman defensive lineman Elijah Robinson,
6'3 260, is expected to slide inside to defensive tackle.
The word from summer workouts is that one returning defensive lineman who may surprise
is redshirt freshman Michael Purcell, who is listed on the roster at 6 '1 305 but appears
to be about 270#.
Because Kendal Briles, the son of new Houston Cougars head coach Art Briles, is transferring
in from the University of Texas, the Cougar's talented young quarterback, redshirt sophomore Barrick Nealy, 6'5 212, asked for and received his release. Nealy is expected to transfer to Southwest Texas State.
Talk on the street is that the Big East has little or no interest in Cincinatti and Memphis.
Both Louisville and East Carolina are attempting to position themselves to attract interest from either the Big East or the ACC. Various potential conference realignment scenarios also include
non-football playing Marquette and South Florida as potential add-in schools to the Big East.
BTW, CUSA has a $500,000 penalty for a school departing for another conference. Advance notice greater than one year reduces the penalty by $100,000 for each additional year of notice given. Conference regs also state that a school is liable to make compensatory payments to the conference if there departure reduces the value
of the conference television packages. Expect litigation on this issue if Louisville gets a chance to leave.
BCS television negotiations for the 2006-2009 bowl seasons are expected to begin in 10-12 months. The issue of access for conferences that do not currently have guaranteed BCS berths
is expected to be addresed in those negotiations,
irregardless of what the outcome of conference realignment.
