Let's forget for a moment about Saturday football games, final scores, and championships, and instead look at the things we sometimes take for granted. DeVon Walker is the embodiment of all things we stand for as Tulane fans and alums, and it is sad that such an unfortunate event like this has to take place to put things in perspective for all of us as human beings.
As a Tulane football fan, you could not ask for more out of a player. A walk-on from Destrehan High School, Devon earned his scholarship, working hard and tirelessly to become a vital member of our team and earning a varsity letter for his first 3 years. He played in nine games as a junior, and had nine tackles in the season opener against Rutgers. Devon was already making an impact this season at strong safety as well as a senior locker room leader.
More importantly, however, as a Tulane fan or alumni, Devon represented student-athlete to its very core: a Cell and Molecular Biology major, one of the most difficult undergrad academic programs, while simultaneously fitting in time for football. People who met Devon on campus or around the community would tell you that he is a stand-up person, a real gentleman who was always polite and quick to help others. Devon has, and will continue to make a lasting impression on all of those who met him. He has already made anyone associated with Tulane proud of not only his athletic endeavors, but more importantly, the man he has become off the field.
While the outpouring of support is coming from across the nation, it is a good time to pause and reflect on what a great person and a great representative of Tulane Devon Walker truly is. While we are still awaiting further word on his condition, it is a sure bet that whatever the outcome, Devon Walker will continue to fight and make his parents, his friends, and his Tulane community proud of ALL of his accomplishments.
Our prayers and support are 100% behind Devon and his family to get through this tough time.
Please visit Tulane's Devon Walker Support Page for further information on Devon's condition, links to support him, or just to send him a message telling him how proud we all are of him and that nation-wide, he has our thoughts and prayers.
