Tulane players were pleasantly surprised Friday afternoon when Green Wave Head Coach Chris Scelfo called practice after just 30 minutes of special teams work in preparation for Saturday's scrimmage at the Westfeldt Facility.
Scelfo called the team together following the kicking sessions and gave the squad its first day off since preseason drills began August 7th.
"Our legs are dead," Scelfo said. "We've been going for eight straight days and we're tired. The ‘want-to' is there and the attitude is there. We're not in great condition yet, but I've got to make the decision on whether it's worth trying to go, or is it better to come back the next day. We're scheduled to work every day this preseason but some days we'll go longer and today we cut it short."
Tulane will scrimmage for 45-60 plays during its Saturday morning practice, which will begin at 9 a.m. and will be followed by Green Wave Fan Day activities from 11:15 a.m. to 1 p.m. At Fan Day, Tulane football, volleyball and soccer players and coaches will be on hand to pose for photos and sign autographs. Fans can also pick up their free season schedule cards and posters, and purchase the latest Green Wave merchandise. Concessions will also be available for sale.
Scelfo said Saturday's scrimmage will give coaches a good opportunity to evaluate the progress of players and to see new players
in a scrimmage situation for the first time.
"We want some of the guys that haven't played before to play fast and be assignment sound," Scelfo said. "We really want to get some good tape on guys in 11-on-11 situations. We need to get a feel for who performs well in those match-ups."
Several players will sit out Saturday's scrimmage, including linebacker Anthony Cannon, defensive lineman Tremell Jack, receiver Damarcus Davis, running backs Mewelde Moore, Jovon Jackson and Adam Wood, defensive backs Joey Dawson and Beau Stubbs and tight end Bobby Hoover.
Tickets for the 2003 Green Wave football season are on sale at the Tulane Athletics Ticket Office in the James W. Wilson Center or by calling 504-861-WAVE. The Green Wave opens the 2003 season on Monday, Sept. 1st at 7 p.m. in the Louisiana Superdome before a national television audience on ESPN.
