Anthony Cannon Named To Butkus Watch List

The Downtown Athletic Club of Orlando, Inc. (DACO), the organization which annually presents the prestigious Butkus Award to the nation's best collegiate linebacker, has announced that Tulane sophomore Anthony Cannon is on its preseason list of 90 candidates for this year's award.

Cannon burst onto the collegiate scene as a true freshman last season, leading Tulane in tackles with 114 from his weakside linebacker spot. In addition to being named the Conference USA Defensive Freshman of the Year, he was a second team Freshman All-American by The Sporting News.

"It surprised me a lot [to be named to the Watch List]," Cannon said. "It motivates me and gives me incentive to do well, both for my team and for my family."

"It is a very deserving honor for Anthony," head coach Chris Scelfo said. "He established himself as a true freshman by making plays and tackles. He has a great career ahead of him."

In addition to Cannon, six other candidates hail from Conference USA. The Wave sophomore is joined by Rod Davis and Michael Boley of Southern Miss, Derrick Ballard of Memphis, Rod Day of Louisville, Maurice Jones of USF and Zac Woodfin of UAB as C-USA's representatives on the list.

The Butkus Award Watch List will be trimmed to 10 semi-finalists on Thursday, October 16. That list will be cut to three finalists, who will be announced via a national teleconference with players, coaches, media members and Butkus Award officials on Thursday, November 13. The winner will be announced Friday, December 12, 2003 at the Butkus Award Gala in Orlando, Fla.

Created in 1985 by the Downtown Athletic Club of Orlando Inc., the Butkus Award carries the name and support of one of the greatest middle linebackers in football history, Dick Butkus. The Butkus Award is regarded as one of the most elite individual honors in college football.
