NEW ORLEANS – Head Coach Chris Scelfo put his 2004 Tulane Green Wave through their first workout Tuesday morning in shorts and helmets at the Westfeldt Facility. Thirty-three newcomers and 68 returnees worked for two-and-a-half hours in the season's initial practice.

Following the practice, Scelfo remarked at the slow overall pace of the day and at the overall conditioning of his team without singling out any individual players.

"We've got to get in better condition," Scelfo said. "Many of the freshmen need to understand the pace of the game, both the redshirts and the newcomers."

Scelfo also noted that during one-a-day workouts this week, which extend through Saturday, the coaching staff will be putting in a lot of new material on all sides of the ball.

"We're putting a lot in on the offense, defense and special teams," he said. "The guys that can grasp it and react will have the best opportunity to play."

Scelfo reserved comment on any individual area until the Wave has a few more workouts under its belt.

"It's hard to tell in shorts and helmets who is grasping what we're working on and what kind of football condition they are in," he said. "We'll know a lot more on Thursday and Friday."

The team will work in shoulder pads and helmets Thursday and Friday before the first practice in full pads on Saturday. Two-a-days begin Sunday with practices at 7 a.m. and 4:15 p.m. on the Westfeldt Facility practice fields.

The Green Wave opens the season Sept. 4 in a nationally-televised contest with Mississippi State at 5 p.m. before returning to New Orleans for the home opener Sept. 11 versus Florida A&M University in the Emerald Coast Classic. Season tickets for the six-game home schedule are on sale through the Tulane Athletics Ticket Office in the James W. Wilson Center or by calling 504-861-WAVE.
