NEW ORLEANS, La. – Tulane University held its first full scrimmage on Wednesday afternoon, running approximately 112 plays under sunny, clear skies at the Westfeldt Complex.

Sophomores Lester Ricard and Nick Cannon and redshirt freshman Richard Irvin played equal time at quarterback with each of them showing flashes of what it will take to win the starting position. Senior Roydell Williams was the top receiver statistically while junior Jovon Jackson and freshman Matt Forté split the bulk of the running back duties.

"We're not mentally tough right now," Tulane head coach Chris Scelfo said. "We don't understand what it takes to compete and succeed at this level. Our guys did not respond very well today."

"This team can choose to be what they want to be," he continued. "Determination and desire will be the main factor for our success this year."

At running back, Jackson had 17 carries for 28 yards while Forté ran 10 times for 22 yards and a touchdown.

"Jovon Jackson ran very well today," Scelfo said. "Michael Batiste showed flashes of being a good receiver. All three quarterbacks did good things and they all did bad things. We need to be consistent."

Ricard completed eight passes in 15 attempts for a game-high 83 yards while also rushing six times for 29 yards. He tossed a pretty spiral to senior Chris Bush over the top for a 34-yard touchdown strike and also found sophomore Damarcus Davis for a nine-yard score in the scrimmage. He also had a pair of touchdown passes and a rushing score in goal-line situations. Cannon completed 8-of-12 passes for 54 yards in his stint. He had one touchdown, finding fullback Zach Viuf from three yards out, and also had one pass picked off. Irvin threw for 61 yards, completing 6-of-11 attempts. He scored on a quarterback draw during the goal-line situations.

Williams had four catches for 51 yards on the day, while Bush, Kenneth Guidroz and Davis each had three receptions. Batiste, a true freshman, had the play of the day, snaring a 44-yard pass from classmate Scott Eilliot over the top of a defender. Elliot had a solid day as well at signal-caller, directing the team 80 yards on his first drive, completing 6-of-7 passes, including a 17-yard touchdown to Guidroz.

Defensively, sophomore Billy Harrison tallied three tackles for loss, including a sack, while freshman Michael Cox and sophomore Carlis Jackson each had interceptions.

"We'll go back to the office and pick apart the tape and get a better idea of things," Scelfo said.

The Green Wave cancelled Thursday's morning practice session and will just hold a 4 p.m. session at the Westfeldt Complex. The team's next scrimmage is scheduled for Saturday afternoon. Tulane's season opener is Sept. 4 at Mississippi State while the Wave's home opener is one week later versus Florida A&M at the Louisiana Superdome. Kickoff for that contest is at 6 p.m. Tickets for that game and the entire 2004 home schedule are on sale at the Green Wave Athletics Ticket Office in the James W. Wilson Center or by calling 504-861-WAVE.
