NEW ORLEANS – With the 2004 season opener versus Mississippi State eight days away, the Tulane football team continued preparing for the Bulldogs in a one-hour and 45 minute workout under cloudy skies at the Westfeldt Facility Friday. According to Tulane Head Coach Chris Scelfo, "game week" has arrived.

"We've been in ‘game week' since Thursday when we started our preparations for Mississippi State," Scelfo said. "Preseason ended for us when school started (Wednesday)."

Scelfo was pleased with Friday's workout, which was conducted in shells (shorts, helmets and shoulder pads) at a brisk pace.

"It was a good practice," Scelfo said. "I thought the guys worked hard. We came out and got a lot done in a short period of time. The secondary and the offensive line were the two areas that stood out today. They are two of the most veteran positions on our team and we have high expectations for those groups this season."

Saturday will be a busy day for the Green Wave team, which will work out at the Superdome in a closed session before returning to the Westfeldt Facility, where Tulane will hold its Annual Fan Day from 6-9 p.m. In case of rain, the event will be moved inside to the Wilson Center.

"We'll go down to the Superdome tomorrow and get our first practice on that surface this preseason," Scelfo said of the ‘Dome's momentum turf. "This is the day we simulate our typical game day and game situations. Tomorrow evening we've got Fan Day and our players are looking forward to interacting with the fans."

The Green Wave will take Sunday off before "game week" actually begins on Monday. Tulane and Misssippi State square off Saturday, Sept. 4 at 5 p.m. in a nationally-televised ESPN2 game in Starkville.

Fan Day, which is free and open to the public, will be held from 6-9 p.m. Saturday at the Westfeldt Facility. The band "Island Breeze" will entertain the crowd while kids can enjoy interactive games with Tulane student-athletes, including members of the football, volleyball, soccer and swim teams. Food and drink will be available while Tulane schedule cards and posters will be given away. The Green Wave Sports Shop and Ticket Office in the Wilson Center will be open and season and individual game tickets are on sale in the office or by calling 504-861-WAVE.
