Tulane Rolls Past Army

Tulane (4-5, 2-4) held off Army (2-7) for a hard fought 45-31 victory in the Louisiana Superdome. The Green Wave held the advantage in virtually every statistical category: 30-18 in first downs, 243-88 in rushing yardage, 350-232 in passing yardage, and 33:11 to 26:49 in time of possession.

True freshman Matt Forte, filling in for injured running back Jovon Jackson, had a huge night piling up 283 all-purpose yards. On the ground, he had 216 yards and 3 touchdowns on 34 carries. Forte also caught 3 passes for 67 yards and another score.

Tulane opened the scoring with a 63 touchdowns pass from Lester Ricard to Roydell Williams with 9:42 remaining in the opening stanza. Army answered with a 1-yard touchdown run by Carlton Jones. The Green Wave retook the lead 10-7 after Nick Beucher hit a 36-yard field goal with 4:32 remaining in the first quarter.

Tulane expanded its lead in the second quarter on a 1-yard dive by Ray Boudreaux and a 47-yard screen pass from Ricard to Forte. Tulane took a 24-7 lead into the half.

Forte opened the second half scoring with a 9-yard touchdown run and Tulane led 31-7. However, Ricard was forced to leave the game with an apparent wrist injury. He was replaced by redshirt freshman quarterback Richard Irvin.

Army cut the lead to 17 when Scott Wesley took the ensuing kickoff 97 yards for a touchdown. Army kicker Austin Miller hit a 28-yard field goal to further trim Tulane's lead to 31-17. Forte then scored on a 48-yard run to give the Green Wave a 38-17 with 3:24 left in the third quarter.

In the final period, Carlton Jones scored from 3 yards out to pull the Cadets to within 14 with 13:21 remaining in the contest. Forte answered with a 1-yard scamper and Tulane led 45-24 with 7:16 remaining. Army's final scored came with 6:21 left in the game when Zac Dahman hit Hahnville alum Aaron Alexander with a 20-yard scoring strike.

Before leaving the game early in the third quarter, Ricard completed 13 of 18 pass attempts for 227 yards and 2 touchdowns with no picks. Irvin completed 10 of 14 passes for 123 yards and 1 interception.

Chris Bush led all Tulane receivers with 8 catches for 104 yards. Roydell Williams finished the evening with 4 receptions for 82 yards and one touchdown.

Tulane returns to action Saturday, November 27th at Texas Christian. Kickoff is scheduled for 2:00 pm.
